On December 6, the announcement of the 2023 Call for Code hackathon winners was made public by the United Nations Human Rights Office of the Commissioner, IBM, Linux Foundation and the David Clark Cause. Call for Code is recognized as the largest annual gathering of its genre with participants from upwards of 180 countries jointly contributing to the creation of around 24,000 applications so far as stated by the David Clark Cause. This year's competition pivoted around addressing "today's most critical global challenges" using accessible tech resources, including IBM's AI service, watsonx. Winners were chosen from three categories: developer, university, and independent vendor/startup, and would receive a cash prize of $50,000 along with developmental assistance from IBM and its associates. AGNO, a Hexaware Technologies team, triumphed in the developer category with their creation of the Farmistar AI platform, a tool aimed at assisting small farmers in establishing crop management tactics based on real-time data. From the University of Sydney, a student team called Phyto emerged as the winners in the university category. They utilized IBM Watson Studio and the IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite to formulate an AI-driven geospatial and weather analysis tool aimed at aiding farmers in restoring contaminated soil through natural means. Persistent's team, Synergy Squad, clinched the win in the independent vendor/startup category for the creation of Offshelf, a text-to-speech enabled platform that aims to minimize consumer waste. Generative AI has experienced widespread adoption since the inception of the generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) era, prominently marked by OpenAI's ChatGPT. Although consumer-facing models, usually in "chatbot" style interfaces and trained on colossal internet data sets, are massively popular, they often don't meet the adequate security and accuracy standards for business use. However, enterprise-focused generative AI, created and trained using enterprise data and spotlighting security is now a significant part of the enterprise. Titan foundational models from Amazon and IBM’s watsonx rank amongst the most utilized ones. IBM’s watsonx provides a comprehensive solution for generative AI requirements of enterprises. It combines foundational models, a data storage facility, and a toolkit for developers. Generative AI can operate as an adjustable interface beyond the chat box and IT stack, allowing developers, engineers, and users to glean insights real-time. As evidenced by the victories of the above-mentioned teams, generative AI can be harnessed for diverse purposes from weather prediction at a farm-scale to household waste reduction.
