Iranian Authorities Criticize Blockchain Game Amid Economic Crisis; Challenges for Mainstream Adoption Highlighted

Algoine News
Summary:
The rising popularity of blockchain play-to-earn game "Hamster Kombat" faces stern criticism from Iranian governmental and conservative figures, claiming it as a Western soft power tool. Despite the economic relief such games offer to Iranians amid escalating inflation and Western sanctions, they're not recognized as mainstream. A recent survey shows over half of the participants were unaware of blockchain gaming, highlighting a vast potential market and the need to improve token utility and gameplay quality in play-to-earn games.
The escalating popularity of the blockchain play-to-earn game, "Hamster Kombat", has invoked severe backlash from Iranian governmental representatives and conservatives. They allege that this uncomplicated play-to-earn tap game is a subtle power tool used by the West. The Iranian military's deputy head, Habibollah Sayyari, suggests that the game serves as a decoy, diverting the Iranian public's attention from imminent elections. Religious leader Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi further emphasized this sentiment, labeling the entire crypto sector as inundated with deceptive practices. Despite these objections, the critics fail to highlight the crucial economic struggles that numerous Iranians face due to increasing inflation and Western-led sanctions. To illustrate, the current financial exchange rate is held at 580,000 Iranian rial per U.S. dollar. Amid such dire economic straits, blockchain games have emerged as potential financial saviors in less prosperous nations. Axie Infinity, an NFT game, exemplifies the rise of this new trend, with top players reportedly earning up to $1,300 per month, a considerable income in less affluent regions. Despite the substantial upfront costs involved in playing Axie, strategic gaming groups offer feasible avenues for players in these countries to mitigate their gaming expenses, all while reaping considerable profits. Yet, the growing prevalence of Web3 games in the developing world isn't enough to place blockchain gaming in the mainstream category. It still lags behind its conventional counterparts. A recent survey by OnePoll uncovered that over half of the participants were completely oblivious to the existence of blockchain gaming, and an additional 32% confessed to being aware of such games but had yet to participate. The data indicates an enormous potential market but also underscores the existing dilemmas in play-to-earn games, such as tangible token usefulness and the absence of high-quality gameplay techniques to compete with PC and console games.
