The Information Technology University (ITU) in Lahore, Pakistan, has initiated the country's premier metaverse-driven virtual reality (VR) classes. Following reports from Samaa TV, a domestic Pakistani news source, this innovative course format incorporates VR gear and motion detection to mirror a customary classroom structure. According to Professor Ibrahim Ghaznavi, ITU Lahore's department head of computer sciences, this venture is projected to augment the learning competencies of students engaging in the metaverse. Even though online classes were introduced amidst the COVID-19 crisis, the transition towards metaverse technology coincides with the global acceptance of VR applications for educational purposes. The VR program at ITU Lahore was reportedly conceived and implemented with assistance from the University of Denmark. The primary influence for this project could likely be drawn from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), regarded as the spiritual guiding force of ITU Lahore. Established in 2012, ITU Lahore’s founding objective was to replicate the technological and engineering triumphs of MIT. It has affiliated collaborations with globally renowned institutions and corporations like Harvard and IBM. Over the past ten years, VR, mixed reality, and augmented reality technologies have swiftly gained prominence. However, much of the initial hype around the dawn of the metaverse was primarily focused on the gaming sector. As tracking data from aggregators such as Steam player counts and Oculus sales manifests, the metaverse hasn't captivated gamers as much as other groundbreaking gaming technologies like handheld consoles or cloud computing. There is a general shift of interest toward the metaverse’s potential in industry, medicine, education, and marketing, with a multitude of applications being integrated into VR headsets and web browsers. World Wide Web inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, recently forecasted spatial computing (visualizing and manipulating computer applications in three-dimensional, augmented reality) as the web's future. In a CNBC interview, Berners-Lee addressed the versatile applications of VR technology and insisted on multimodal support for widespread acceptance, "you can interact with VR technology in many ways, be it a VR headset, a large screen, or via your phone, the experiences must be unified and fluid across various devices.
