Meta Bans Political Campaigns from Using AI Advertising Tools Amid Deep Fake Concerns

Algoine News
Summary:
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has prohibited the use of its AI advertising tools for political campaigns and certain advertisers. An updated policy now bars adverts related to housing, employment, credit roles, social issues, elections, politics, health, pharmaceuticals, or financial services from using these AI features. This step has been made to comprehend potential risks and build adequate safeguards in ads involving sensitive subjects. In the meantime, Google demands verified election advertisers to disclose their AI usage, influencing regulation considerations around political AI deep fakes in the US ahead of the 2024 election. The broad use of AI, however, has raised concerns about potential impacts on voter sentiment through creation of fake news and deep fakes.
Meta, the corporation behind Facebook and Instagram, has banned political campaigns and advertisers from leveraging its AI-powered advertising tools, according to an exclusive statement to Reuters from a company representative. Meta revised its help center on November 6th to reflect this new policy. As it experiments with novel generative AI advertising methods within Ads Manager, the business specified that advertisers promoting content related to Housing, Employment, Credit, Social Issues, Elections, Politics, Health, Pharmaceuticals, or Financial Services are currently barred from using these AI tools. The firm explains that this strategy will enable it to better grasp potential risks and develop appropriate safety measures for AI application in ads related to potentially sensitive subjects in regulated sectors. Yet, Meta's overarching advertising regulations don't specifically cover AI, but they do prohibit running ads featuring content disproven by the company's fact-checkers. This echoes a recent trend of growing skepticism towards AI usage shown by consumer surveys. Google, in September, amended its political content guidelines to require all verified election advertisers to divulge their AI usage in their campaign material. Google's guidelines spotlight "synthetic content depicting real or realistic aspects falsely" and command that disclosures be "clear and visible" where users can easily see them. On Google's platforms, however, ads containing 'synthetic content' modified or generated such that it has no bearing on the ad's claims will be exempted from these disclosure necessities. The US regulatory bodies are also contemplating rules to govern the use of AI deep fakes in politics before the 2024 election cycle. There's already apprehension about the potential influence of AI on voter perspectives via fake news generation and deep fakes on social media platforms. There have also been disputed allegations of a popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, having a left-wing political bias within the tech and academic worlds.
