President of Square Enix, Takashi Kiryu, publicized these current changes via a blog post titled 'A New Year's Letter from the President.' “Our three prime investment areas, blockchain entertainment/Web 3.0, AI, and cloud, were previously outlined. We redefined our broad objectives and targets for these areas last year. At present, we're modifying our organizational setup and optimizing our resource utilization to facilitate these efforts," wrote Kiryu. Square Enix, Kiryu stated, plans to aggressively employ AI and other ground-breaking tech for its content creation and distribution operations. The president inferred the company's intention to adopt generative AI technologies, pointing to ChatGPT as an instance. He noted that AI has ventured beyond academic discussions and hinted at the company's plans to incorporate generative AI technologies in some of its processes. “Generative AI, I trust, has the potency to not only transform our creations but to altogether alter the methods of our creation, including coding." In his letter, Kiryu briefly addressed blockchain and Web3 tech without delving deep into the company's forthcoming plans in that sector. Square Enix, renowned globally for the Final Fantasy media franchise, is also one of the largest developers/publishers to marry blockchain/Web 3 tech with mainstream video gaming. As per recent reports by Cointelegraph, Square Enix launched an NFT-based endeavour in December 2023 named “Symbiogenesis.” This novel project, according to the company, offers an interactive art experience combining collectibles and story-telling elements.
