Bitcoin Ordinals' Website Faces Persistent DDoS Attacks Amid Claims of Network Spamming

Algoine News
Summary:
Bitcoin Ordinals' website has been consistently interrupted by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, which some critics find ironic as they accuse the site of spamming the Bitcoin network. The situation attracted diverse reactions, including those who saw irony or hypocrisy in the attack. The DDoS attack followed the release of a code script thought to allow anti-Ordinals node operators to censor related blocks on Bitcoin. Despite the controversy, Andrew Poelstra from Blockstream argues that Ordinals aren't threatening to Bitcoin, labeling them a "passing fad.
The website for Bitcoin Ordinals has been subjected to a persistent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, causing it to be repeatedly disrupted. Skeptics who typically label the inscriptions as 'spamming' the Bitcoin network are finding a certain irony in the situation. The DDoS assault on the site was made public by its creator, Casey Rodarmor, on Dec. 27, stating that it was the first since its debut in January. A DDoS incident involves a malevolent effort to interfere with standard traffic by inundating the target server or network with an excessive volume of online activity. Throughout the day, the activity on the Ordinals' website has been erratic and it remains inaccessible presently. Some critics, notably those who perceive Ordinals as spamming the Bitcoin network, found it somewhat humorous that the website was essentially being spammed. One such critic was Luke Dashjr, founder of the Bitcoin mining company OCEAN, who humorously dubbed the event hypocritical, stating, “How dare you call it a DDoS. I am certain everyone involved is paying their internet bills.” He also clarified that he did not condone DDoS, he was simply highlighting the irony. Some critics of Ordinals were more direct in their responses. “MeanHash” cautioned Rodarmor about naming the potential attacker as a spammer. Another individual known as “Southern hands,” inquired, “You don’t intend to censor legitimate TCP/IP packets, do you?” Dashjr later drew a comparison, likening the Ordinals-induced spam to a very serious crime in a now-removed post. This DDoS assault follows the release of a code script - possibly tongue-in-cheek - by Taproot Wizards’ CTO “Rijndael” which is suggested to allow node operators who dislike Ordinals to censor related blocks on Bitcoin. This step was perceived as a challenge to critics of Ordinals to either take action or remain silent. Despite claims of spamming, Ordinals aren't harming the Bitcoin network, contends Andrew Poelstra, Blockstream's Director of Research, during his recent chat with Cointelegraph. According to Poelstra, despite their impact on the fee market, Ordinals are an inconsequential part of the broader Bitcoin economy and do not pose a significant risk of usurping Bitcoin on its own network. Despite conceding there's no technical method to expunge Ordinals from Bitcoin, he views the nonfungible token-like inscriptions as a transitory trend. “All we can do is wait them out," he claimed.
