Proto-Danksharding Expected to Drastically Cut Roll-Up Costs in Ethereum Ecosystem, Says Consensys

Algoine News
Summary:
Zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) have been instrumental in scaling the Ethereum ecosystem. According to Consensys' zkEVM Linea head, Nicolas Liochon, proto-danksharding could significantly reduce roll-up costs by 10 times. Proto-danksharding, or EIP-4844, aims to decrease costs by batching transactions off-chain and submitting proof to the Ethereum blockchain. The Ethereum Foundation is still developing proto-danksharding. Linea, introduced by Consensys, provides cheaper transactions compared to Ethereum's layer one. Liochon highlights the importance of data availability in reducing roll-up costs. Linea seeks to be a versatile ZK-rollup solution for various applications in the Ethereum ecosystem.
Zero-knowledge proof solutions, known as ZK-proofs, have played a crucial role in the scalability of the Ethereum ecosystem. However, Consensys' zkEVM Linea head, Nicolas Liochon, believes that proto-danksharding could significantly reduce the cost of roll-ups. In an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph Magazine editor Andrew Fenton during Korea Blockchain Week, Liochon estimated that proto-danksharding could decrease roll-up costs by 10 times. Proto-danksharding, also known as EIP-4844, aims to lower the cost of rollups by batching transactions and data off-chain before submitting computational proof to the Ethereum blockchain. The Ethereum Foundation is still in the process of developing and testing proto-danksharding, without an official launch date confirmed. According to Liochon, Linea currently offers transactions that are 15 times cheaper than those on Ethereum's layer one. However, rollups are limited due to the fact that transactions are posted in calldata in Ethereum blocks. EIP-4844 introduces data blocks that can be attached to blocks, reducing transaction costs. Liochon emphasizes that the cost of rollups is mainly determined by data availability, with 95% of the cost associated with writing data to layer one. The Linea prover, responsible for off-chain computation and creating cryptographic proofs for transactions, represents only a fifth of the cost. Liochon hopes that Linea will serve as a versatile ZK-rollup solution for various applications within the Ethereum ecosystem, including DeFi, gaming, and social platforms. Consensys successfully launched Linea in August 2023, gaining over 150 partners and bridging over $26 million in ETH.
