Adobe, IBM, Nvidia, and other companies endorse President Joe Biden's voluntary AI commitments, including watermarking AI-generated content, as announced by the White House. Private sector collaboration is emphasized to leverage AI advantages and mitigate risks. Progress in AI legislation remains limited, leading to temporary private commitments. The Biden administration aims to establish a global framework for AI with international allies.
Adobe, IBM, and Nvidia are among the companies that have supported President Joe Biden's voluntary artificial intelligence (AI) commitments, which include the implementation of watermarking for AI-generated content. The White House, on Tuesday, September 12, made this announcement. Highlighting the importance of harnessing the advantages of AI, addressing its risks, and taking prompt action, White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients stated, "We are collaborating with the private sector and utilizing all available resources to achieve this objective." Other companies, namely Palantir, Stability, Salesforce, Scale AI, and Cohere, have also joined these commitments. These commitments, which were initially revealed in July, were aimed at preventing the malicious use of AI capabilities. Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft endorsed these commitments during the same month. While the private commitments supported by the Biden administration are seen as a temporary measure, discussions within Congress on potential AI legislation have been ongoing, albeit with minimal progress in terms of introduced bills or significant legal changes. Meanwhile, the White House is actively working on an executive order relating to AI. In June 2023, a group of bipartisan lawmakers introduced a bill that sought to establish an AI commission to address issues in this rapidly expanding sector. The Biden Administration has expressed its commitment to collaborating with international allies, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom, in developing a global framework for AI.
