Web platform Opera has announced its plans to launch a non-custodial stablecoin wallet integrated into its mobile web browser, specifically targeting its user base in Africa. The wallet, called MiniPay, is built on the Celo blockchain and will enable users in Africa to send and receive stablecoins through their existing mobile numbers. With over 100 million users on the continent, Opera has been operating in Africa for 17 years. The launch of MiniPay will initially take place in Nigeria, followed by other countries such as Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. The new wallet aims to address concerns such as high fees, unreliable service uptimes, lack of transaction transparency, and limited access to mobile data. It will also offer sub-cent fees and allow users to backup and access their wallets using their Google credentials. Additionally, the MiniPay wallet will integrate with local payment methods, including Airtime and MPesa, and traditional bank transfers, facilitating the conversion of stablecoins into local currency. The integration between Opera and Celo is expected to pave the way for more Ethereum-compatible decentralized applications (dApps) for MiniPay. Further details and comments from both companies are yet to be provided. In a previous update, Opera introduced an AI feature called AI Prompt in its browser, providing users with contextual prompts for web pages or highlighted text. The company has also launched a suite of security tools to protect users against malicious actors in the Web3 ecosystem.
