OpenAI Equips ChatGPT with Web Browsing Abilities, Expands Knowledge Base Beyond 2021

Algoine News
Summary:
OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT with web browsing capabilities, enabling it to fetch and incorporate current information into its responses, a move expanding its knowledge base beyond data from before September 2021. The feature, immediately available to Plus and Enterprise users, is set to be offered to other users in the near future. This follows OpenAI's recent multimodal update for ChatGPT and the release of DALL-E 3, their latest image-generation AI. These changes come ahead of OpenAI DevDay, their first developer conference.
OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) organization, announced on X (formerly Twitter) on September 27th that its ChatGPT now has web browsing capabilities, allowing it to incorporate relevant and recent information into its responses. This new feature includes providing direct source links and is not confined to data prior to September 2021. The feature updates have been immediately rolled out for Plus and Enterprise users of the GPT-4 model. The web browsing availability for other users is marked as "coming soon" without any explicit mention of whether it would be offered to non-premium users or included in the GPT 3.5 model. OpenAI has yet to provide a specific response to this query. ChatGPT had previously been constrained by an expanding knowledge gap, as it's capacity to gather new information was restricted, with its knowledge base capping at 2021. This issue arises from the training techniques employed in AI models like generative pre-trained transformers (GPT). Earlier, OpenAI experimented with adding browsing capabilities to ChatGPT, encountering both wins and obstacles. Concerns were raised in June 2023 about beta versions of ChatGPT potentially circumventing paywalls. Other reported issues included a tendency for fabricated or exaggerated information and confusion between contemporary and historical data. This browsing feature enhancement follows OpenAI's news on September 25th that ChatGPT was also undergoing a multimodal update. The upgrade allows ChatGPT to interpret spoken queries in simple language, respond with one of five distinct voices, and understand and process images. In the wake of these developments, OpenAI also launched DALL-E 3, the newest iteration of its image-generation AI. With this wave of updates across OpenAI's product range, there is anticipation about the forthcoming announcements at its inaugural developer conference, OpenAI DevDay, scheduled for November 6 in San Francisco.
