Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy Minister, states that the million applicants of the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative will undertake an introductory AI course. He declared this on X (previously Twitter) this Wednesday, mentioning that applicants are presently being integrated into the platform ahead of the selection of the first 30,000 fellows. On November 6, Tijani mentioned that program application numbers had exceeded one million and advised applicants to keep an eye on their email for further directions. Those who got and verified their email are now part of the onboarding process on the fellow platform. Tijani highlights that many applicants who are already in the onboarding process are quickly completing the AI course. He commented that it's encouraging to see several applicants quickly progressing through the course and he's excited to see what comes next. However, several applicants have voiced their concerns, stating they haven't received confirmation emails yet. Various technical issues, such as problems with one-time passwords (OTPs), are causing difficulties with registration confirmation. The training will progress across three stages, as stated in the government’s disclosed execution plan. The first phase aims to engage 30,000 applicants and the subsequent phase 300,000. The third phase is allocated for the comprehensive program, encompassing three million participants. The initial phase of the program will involve a variety of stakeholders, which includes fellows, training providers, partners, and organizations for placements. The program is conducted in coordination with NITDA. As per Tijani, during the first stage, participants will receive training in a multitude of skills using technology to broaden their capabilities in various fields, with the exception of direct tech creation. The skills include Digital Marketing, Project Management Software, aiding Navigation on Cloud Platforms, Data Analysis, Visualization, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), CRM Management, Accounting Software use, Graphics Designing, and UX/UI Designing. The Nigerian government revealed last month a grant of 5 million naira ($6,444) to 45 AI-focused startups and researchers. This is part of the newly launched Nigeria artificial intelligence Research Scheme, aiming to promulgate the use of AI in driving economic progress.
