The reinforcement of security arrives on the heels of a substantial increase in user engagement, culminating in a record high expected for 2022. MetaMask noted an uptick of its monthly active users from 19 million in September 2023 to a whopping 30 million in January 2024. This growth spurt is largely credited to its collaborations with high-profile trading platforms, including Robinhood.
MetaMask initially implemented the security alerts on the Ethereum mainnet through an extension, unveiled on Jan. 29, 2024. These alerts serve as a timely reminder for users to exercise caution whenever they come into contact with an established threat by simulating the requested transaction, identifying hostile behaviors and notifying the user of any prospective transaction that might result in a loss of funds. Importantly, MetaMask assures that its security alerts are privacy-centric, contrasting the majority of Web3 wallets which tend to depend on third-party verification of users' transaction data to maintain security alerts.
The security alert system was first launched in April 2023, functioning as an open experimental alert on OpenSea, subsequently helping secure assets worth $500 million. Given its success, MetaMask decided to carry these alerts into its own digital wallet. The feature was created in conjunction with Blockaid, the security partner of MetaMask, and has already shown its efficacy in dodging the well-known phishing fraud in September 2023 that involved hacking of handle belonging to Vitalik.
Blockaid’s mechanisms sensed the malicious DApp a full day before the incident occurred, thus helping users spare $100,000 worth of assets. In yet another incident, the system also signaled when the Twitter account of Uniswap creator Hayden Adams was compromised. Barbara Schorchit, the Senior Product Manager at MetaMask, revealed that there has been a slight increase in customer feedback commending the beneficial feature and reporting potentially harmful websites.
In December, during the Ledger Connect Kit incident, the alert feature helped users salvage over a million as nearly 100 front-end DApps were breached. Yet, all MetaMask users who chose to activate the Blockaid-powered alerts remained secure, thus preventing an estimated loss of ~$1.15M in assets.
Beyond just emphasizing on privacy-oriented security alerts, MetaMask is also making strides in educating its community to recognize and avert scams. As part of this endeavor, it is working on a platform that serves as a comprehensive tutorial to navigate various scams.
