Algoine News
Summary:
Argentina's President, Javier Milei, is touring the United States, meeting with influential tech CEOs in Silicon Valley to foster business ties. Milei met with OpenAI and Worldcoin's leader, Sam Altman, and will meet high-profile tech figures including Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Apple’s Tim Cook. His US tour, the fourth since taking office, aims to invite high-tech investments in economically troubled Argentina. Despite being a controversial figure at home, Milei continues to foster relations with industry leaders internationally.
During his tour of the United States, Argentina's President, Javier Milei, is set to meet privately with influential individuals, including leading tech CEOs in Silicon Valley, California. The aim of these meetings, as per media releases, is to foster business ties with Argentina. In his one-hour discussion with OpenAI and Worldcoin's leader Sam Altman on May 28, Milei highlighted the tremendous potential a libertarian Argentina can offer. Alex Blania, co-founder and CEO of Tools for Humanity, the principal developer of the Worldcoin project, was in presence too. This the second time Milei connected with these executives. Despite encountering political resistance, Worldcoin was operational in Argentina in the summer of 2023. High-profile tech figures like Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, and Tim Cook of Apple are also on Milei's agenda. Furthermore, Milei will interact with a collective of start-up and AI entrepreneurs, and present at the Pacific Summit. This tour marks Milei's fourth United States visit since he took office on December 10, following a runoff. He travels with a group of Argentina's high-ranking officials. According to Jon Hartley's report, some of the other identified individuals for Milei's meeting include former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. On May 28, Milei also held a meeting with Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, with discussions centered around the situation in Gaza. From a related context, Argentina, grappling with inflation, would greatly welcome investments from the high-tech industry. In spite of a reduction in inflation from 133% to 50% during his relatively short term, Milei continues to be a controversial figure domestically. However, his regular engagements with industry leaders enhance his reputation. Milei, who campaigned as a cryptocurrency supporter intending to abolish the country's central bank, has unfortunately disappointed many of his supporters by retracting on several of his pledges. Nevertheless, Argentina and Salvadoran regulators convened on May 23 to discuss El Salvador's experience with Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender. After concluding his U.S visit on May 31, Milei will attend the second-term inaugural ceremony of Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele.
