Rising Phishing Attacks Threaten Telegram-Linked TON Amidst Its Rapid Growth in 2024
Summary:
The Open Network (TON), related to Telegram, reports a rise in phishing attacks, according to Yu Xian, founder of security firm SlowMist. Such threats are particularly high for users with anonymous numbers unlinking their Telegram accounts from SIM cards. Phishing links are disseminated through message groups and airdrops. TON's Total Value Locked (TVL) has surged by 4,500% in 2024 due to substantial growth in TON-based projects, while security platforms warn users against potential scams.
The Open Network (TON), a blockchain platform connected with Telegram, is experiencing an upsurge in phishing attacks within its ecosystem, warns a blockchain security specialist. SlowMist founder, Yu Xian, has observed a rise in phishing attempts on TON's vibrant ecosystem - comprising various decentralized apps (DApps) and tokens based on TON’s blockchain - amidst its volatile expansion in 2024. In a post dated June 23, Xian reveals that the susceptibility to phishing in TON's ecosystem is linked to scammers' ability to access message groups and distribute phishing links. He commented on the matter: “Phishing links or bot forms are disseminated through message group, airdrops and more, misleading users and stealing their TON wallets en masse due to Telegram's over-liberated ecosystem.” Telegram users with unaffiliated numbers are particularly threatened, as phishing threats on the Telegram messenger are elevated for users using unaffiliated numbers to establish Telegram accounts not linked to SIM cards. The "unaffiliated numbers" option was introduced on Telegram towards the end of 2022, enabling users to log in without a SIM card by making use of blockchain-backed unaffiliated numbers obtainable on platforms like Fragment. This surge in TON ecosystem-linked phishing threats coincides with a dramatic increase in TON-based programs like the native cryptocurrency, Toncoin(TON), and the play-to-earn token Notcoin(NOT). The TON ecosystem's total value locked (TVL) has soared 4,500% in 2024 alone. Amidst TON's rapid 2024 growth, multiple security platforms have urged users about phishing and fraudulent schemes. In April, Kaspersky's cybersecurity specialists alerted the people of a significant fraud involving TON ecosystem patrons—unofficial Telegram bots were used to filch coins from users by connecting their Wallet, Telegram's third-party crypto wallet, to the bot system. Despite requests for a comment on the spike in phishing attacks on TON's ecosystem, the TON Foundation has, thus far, remained silent.
