Former CEO of FTX, Sam Bankman Fried, is seeking pre-trial release due to inadequate internet connectivity in the federal jail where he is being held. Bankman Fried's lawyers argue that the poor internet connection is hindering their defense preparation and wasting time. This request for release is the second within the past week, following the denial of an immediate release request on September 6th. The motion has now been referred to the next three-judge panel by the Appellate judge. Bankman Fried's legal team points out that despite assurances from the government regarding laptop access from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, these promises have not been fulfilled. They also highlight instances where access to an internet laptop was abruptly cut short due to jail proceedings. For example, on September 1st, Bankman Fried was called back to his cell for a headcount, resulting in four hours of lost preparation time. Another incident occurred on September 6th when he was not released from his cell until 11 a.m. and could only review one document from the discovery database due to poor internet connection. The legal team emphasizes that these limitations hinder Bankman Fried's ability to adequately review and search documents before the trial. Bankman Fried was initially released on a $250 million bond following his arrest in the Bahamas last year. However, his bail was revoked on August 11th after he was found trying to contact and intimidate former FTX executives and witnesses in the lawsuit. Despite multiple appeals for pre-trial release, judges have argued that Bankman Fried has repeatedly violated bail conditions, making an immediate release impossible.
