In an effort to highlighting its usage in the public sector, the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) has announced plans to develop a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). The project is driven by the IGF's Blockchain Assurance & Standardization (BSA) coalition, and aims to exemplify how regulatory bodies might benefit from integrating blockchain technology and DAO principles into their existing structures. The focus is on showcasing the decision-making potential of DAOs rather than the financial implications. The BSA coalition, which includes members from government entities in six different countries such as the central banks of Brazil and Nigeria, regularly holds open-entry meetings globally. The coalition's facilitating responsibilities are carried out by the non-profit Government Blockchain Association (GBA), which is also in charge of supplying infrastructure support for the DAO pilot via their associates at Gosh, an Ethereum layer-2 solution. According to Dino Cataldo Dell’Accio, one of the group's leading figures, the initiative acts crucially, paving the way for the emergence of innovative, secure governance models. He emphasized their commitment to harness blockchain technology for the welfare of public sector establishments. This partnership between the IGF and the GBA forms an integral part of an overarching international movement to streamline the application of blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. Many pilot programs for blockchain initiatives have already been launched by coalition members. The GBA actively pursues objectives that align with the U.N.'s Global Digital Compact. This encompasses areas like digital accessibility, sustainable development, human rights, and instilling trust. One of the main outputs from the GBA so far is the Blockchain Maturity Model, a tool used for assessing assorted blockchain solutions. Despite identifying as a business association, it maintains a broad member base that extends to government offices in 61 countries along with the United Nations.
