The NEAR Foundation’s business development team collaborated with the ICC to identify potential use cases for the World Cup event commencing on October 5.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has joined forces with the NEAR Foundation to create a Web3, blockchain-based fan interaction application for the upcoming 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. This tech venture aims to connect with hundreds of millions of cricket enthusiasts over the next month and a half. The ICC's chief of digital operations, Chris Donovan, and NEAR's CEO, Finn Bradshaw, provided Cointelegraph with an insider view on the mobile Web3 app designed to boost fan involvement throughout all phases of the matches at this international event. Previously, the ICC ventured into the Web3 environment by launching FanCraze, an NFT platform in 2022. FanCraze provided spectators with the opportunity to claim ownership of iconic cricket moments from different ICC tournaments. This platform set the groundwork for future Web3 initiatives. The upcoming app will provide fans with the opportunity to participate in games predicting different match strategies. The accuracy of their predictions will grant them points, which will count towards leaderboards and various rewards during the tournament. Donovan highlighted the shared vision between the ICC and NEAR of using Web3 technology to enhance the digital fan experience. NEAR's Blockchain Operating System's ability to operate along various blockchains was one of the major attractions for the ICC. NEAR operates as a layer-1 blockchain, featuring infrastructure scalability that permits communication, smart contracts, and transactions within other blockchain systems. Bradshaw noted this characteristic could be beneficial in identifying additional application areas within the five-year partnership, ending in December 2025. Sports marketing and advertising have played a significant role in the adoption of cryptocurrencies and Web3. Bradshaw views the Cricket World Cup in India as an ideal stage to demonstrate real-world applications of blockchain technology, given the sport's immense popularity in the region. NEAR Foundation’s business development team spent four months identifying potential use cases for the app in collaboration with the ICC. The tournament is set to start on October 5, and the final match is slated for November 19.
