Human Institute Unveils Privacy-Preserving Palm Recognition Tech for Web3 Verification

Algoine News
Summary:
The Human Institute has launched the Humanity Protocol, a non-invasive biometric palm recognition technology for verifying Web3 identities. Developed in collaboration with Animoca Brands and Polygon Labs, the technology is intended to offer a privacy-preserving alternative to more invasive biometric verification methods. The Protocol gives users complete ownership of their data and lays the foundation for many blockchain and real-world applications, according to Polygon's co-founder.
Human Institute has unveiled the Humanity Protocol - a biometric palm recognition technology that respects user privacy while authenticating Web3 identities. This program kickstarted on the Polygon CDK testnet on 20th February and is a collaborative effort featuring Animoca Brands and Polygon Labs, a fact revealed in a press statement shared with Cointelegraph. Humanity Protocol, the brainchild of Balázs Némethi and Chung Yin, hopes to present a less intrusive option compared to existing biometric verification methods like iris scans. Yat Siu, the co-founder and chief executive of Animoca Brands, opined that current proof-of-personhood solutions might be intrusive and cumbersome for users. He contrasted such methods against Humanity Protocol, asserting that the latter fosters inclusivity and justice for users. He articulated that by employing innovative technology in non-intrusive biometrics, Humanity Protocol furthers user-centric platforms which welcome millions to a digital identity solution that's decentralized and upholds true digital ownership principles. Three months post-launch, Humanity Protocol had so far recorded 40,000 registered members on February 13. The program's foundational Layer-2, Polygon CDK, uses zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) to bolster network security and encompasses the proof-of-humanity (PoH) consensus mechanism for identity verification. ZK-proofs are cryptographic agreements that allow a user to show specific information to another user without disclosing the information itself. According to Exverse founder Nikita Uriupin, such privacy-preserving technologies like ZK-proofs could propagate the widespread acceptance of Web3 technologies. He elaborated that in a world where personal data breaches are rampant, Web3 solutions would enhance confidence for Web2. IT Governance data revealed that in 2023, there had been 2,814 reported data breaches, resulting in over 8.2 billion known documents breached over the year. In contrast to Web2 data management systems, Humanity Protocol gives users complete control of their data. Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, expressed his belief that the program could lead to a variety of new use cases. He posited that Humanity Protocol, being the world's first blockchain ecosystem that is both truly sybil-resistant and integrates verifiable credentials into a decentralized validator node network, lays the groundwork for a variety of blockchain and real-world applications.
