Ethereum Introduces Holešky Testnet for Staking, Infrastructure, and Protocol Development

Algoine News
Summary:
Ethereum developers have launched a new testnet called "Holešky" for staking, infrastructure, and protocol development. It features a substantial initial supply of ETH and aims to address testing needs. The testnet will serve as a platform for implementing various features before their deployment on the mainnet.
Ethereum developers have recently introduced a new testnet called "Holešky" on September 15. This testnet is specifically designed for staking, infrastructure, and protocol development purposes, as mentioned in the developer documents. Despite the launch of Holešky, Sepolia will continue to be the primary network for application development. According to Tim Beiko, an Ethereum developer, validators on Holešky's launch day will be allocated an initial supply of 1.6 billion Holesky testnet Ether (HETH). This amount is ten times greater than the ETH present on the mainnet. The decision to provide this substantial supply was made with confidence, considering that "devnets regularly use a 10B supply." Previously, the Goerli testnet served as the platform for testing new staking, infrastructure, and protocol developments. However, developers started raising concerns in October, citing the insufficient supply of ETH on Goerli for effective testing. Holešky, with its ample initial ETH supply, is expected to address and alleviate these issues. Since the launch of Sepolia in 2021, the Ethereum team has been encouraging application developers to transition from Goerli to Sepolia. With the arrival of Holešky, only protocol developers will remain on the old network until Goerli's deprecation in January 2024. After deprecation, Goerli will be maintained for another year before being permanently shut down, according to the provided documentation. Given Ethereum developers' ambitious roadmap, Holešky is anticipated to see significant usage. Features such as proto-danksharding, danksharding, and Verkle trees are on the agenda, with the aim of reducing fees and making running a node more cost-effective. These features will need thorough testing on a testnet before being implemented on the mainnet.
