Ethereum Name Service Teams Up with GoDaddy for Seamless .eth Domain Integration

Algoine News
Summary:
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and GoDaddy have partnered to permit Web3 users to connect their .eth domains to traditional Web2 domains free of charge. This partnership is seen as a combination of domain names and blockchain technology, contributing to both Web2 and Web3 platforms. The move addresses the high gas fees that previously dissuaded users from transferring their domain names to ENS. Furthermore, the development allows DNS domain owners to have enhanced control over their decentralized identities.
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has collaborated with online domain registrar GoDaddy to enable Web3 community members to connect their .eth domains to standard Web2 domains without incurring any additional costs. ENS offers a decentralized domain name system that lets users register domain names on Web3, making it easy to convert complex wallet addresses to user-friendly names. Now, as part of the partnership with GoDaddy, .eth domain owners can bridge their domains to traditional ones for free. The deal addresses the issue of substantial gas fees which had previously discouraged users from porting their domain names to ENS. GoDaddy's domains president, Paul Nicks, hailed the partnership as a merging of domain names with blockchain technology, beneficial for both Web2 and Web3 environments. Recently, ENS made it possible to migrate to their service, free of charge, by introducing new smart contracts for the resolution process. As such, DNS domain owners can achieve more self-sovereignty by gaining enhanced control over their own decentralized identities. GoDaddy's rival in the Web3 domain space, Unstoppable Domains, began allowing customers to purchase .eth domains offering additional payment options and enhanced management capabilities in July 2023. All .eth domains sold by Unstoppable are registered via the ENS smart contract and possess the equivalent functionalities as those procured directly through ENS. In November 2023, ENS developers challenged a patent by Unstoppable Domains, which assigned Braden River Pezeshki, Matthew Everett Gould, and Bogdan Gusiev as inventors of a solution using blockchain technology to assign domains. However, ENS developer Nick Johnson argued that the patent was entirely dependent on ENS-created innovations and did not include any new breakthroughs. Responding to the claims, CEO of Unstoppable Domains, Matthew Gould, denied misappropriating ENS's intellectual property, explaining their submission of 18 patent applications, including one for Resolving Blockchain Domains, was a strategic move for safeguarding their operational freedom and defending against possible infringements by major Web2 domain registries.
