Experts Call for New Federal Agency to Govern Artificial Intelligence, Survey Reveals
Summary:
Plurality of experts in the US support the creation of a federal agency dedicated to governing artificial intelligence (AI), according to a survey conducted by Axios, Generation Lab, and Syracuse University. The survey results also highlight expert opinions on AI regulation, career recommendations, and the potential control of AI by humans.
A new survey conducted by Axios, Generation Lab, and Syracuse University revealed that a plurality of experts, consisting of 37% of respondents, believe that the United States should establish a dedicated federal agency specifically focused on governing artificial intelligence (AI). The survey, which involved 215 computer science professors from 65 esteemed universities in the US, also found that 22% of respondents suggested a global organization or treaty as the best entity to regulate AI. Interestingly, only 16% of participants answered with "congress," while a mere 2% believed that AI should be left unregulated. Further insights from the survey showed that a majority of the professors encouraged young individuals to pursue careers in AI, engineering, and data science. Conversely, 31% of the polled professors advised against careers in media, and 19% discouraged pursuing the arts. Additionally, the responses regarding whether there is a point at which humans can no longer regain control over AI were divided, with 41% expressing doubt, 35% leaning towards a positive response, 19% firmly denying it, and 6% affirming the likelihood of such a threshold. Surprisingly, the overall sentiment of the experts appeared to contrast with that of the general public and business leaders, as 73% of the professors believed that AI will only be capable of performing less than 20% of the tasks currently carried out by humans at or above human levels.
