Emurgo Addresses Gaps in Cardano Through Decentralized Identities and Layer-2 Solutions
Summary:
Emurgo, the governing entity of Cardano, aims to fill gaps in the platform through decentralized identities and layer-2 solutions. They are transitioning to a venture studio model to address 21 missing categories. Emurgo plans to either build solutions or invest in them. Key focus areas include decentralized identity and layer-2 sidechains. They also prioritize improving developers' experience and promoting alternative programming languages like Aiken.
Emurgo, one of the governing entities of Cardano, is working to fill the gaps in the blockchain platform, including decentralized identities and layer-2 solutions. According to Emurgo CEO Ken Kodama, they are shifting their approach to a venture studio model in order to address the 21 categories that they believe are missing in Cardano compared to other leading blockchains. These gaps will be filled either by building the solutions themselves or investing in them. Some of the categories highlighted include decentralized identity (DID) for enterprise adoption and layer-2 sidechains. Kodama emphasized the importance of decentralized identity and mentioned that Cardano currently lacks DID applications. In addition, Cardano's scaling solution called Hydra will be complemented by the integration of layer-2 solutions to improve the ecosystem. Emurgo is also exploring zero-knowledge rollups and optimistic rollups and has conducted a hackathon focused on these technologies. Among the 21 categories, Kodama emphasized the need to address the developers' experience as a pressing issue. Currently, developers must understand Haskell and Plutus programming languages to build on Cardano, but the number of developers familiar with these languages is relatively low. To address this, Emurgo supports Aiken, a toolkit and programming language for smart contract development on Cardano, with the aim of broadening the pool of builders. They have educated over 2,000 builders in Haskell and Plutus, but believe more options like Aiken are necessary.
