The latest transfer involved 300 BNB tokens valued at around $61,500 and 520,000 MATIC tokens worth over $266,000, which were both bridged to the Avalanche blockchain. This adds to the $4.5 million in stolen funds that were already transferred to the Bitcoin blockchain. The total amount transferred represents only 1.2% of the total amount stolen, which amounts to $41 million. The hackers gained access to the private key of Stake's Binance Smart Chain and Ethereum hot wallets. The FBI believes that North Korea's Lazarus Group was responsible for the exploit. With this latest hack, the cumulative total of cryptocurrency hacks and scams in 2023 has surpassed $1 billion. In September alone, a cryptocurrency whale lost $24 million in staked Ether (ETH) in a phishing attack, and Vitalik Buterin's X account was compromised in a nonfungible token scam worth $691,000. In addition, there have been other incidents such as the Pepe coin withdrawal incident ($13.2 million loss), Exactly Protocol's exploit ($7.3 million loss), and a security vulnerability on Balancer ($2.1 million loss).
