Conduit Unveils Platform for Affordable, Quick Deployment of Ethereum Layer-3 Rollups

The blockchain infrastructure company, Conduit, recently unveiled a new platform that enables users to construct and roll out a layer-3 rollup on Ethereum or other networks, with prices beginning at $50/month and deployment times as short as 15 minutes. On February 21, Conduit introduced the platform, underlining the value of "ultra high-throughput" layer 3s in further minimizing transaction costs. “General-purpose L2 networks like Base and OP Mainnet are cost-effective and fast, powering a range of different applications,” Conduit stated in their blog. However, they highlighted that some applications require even more cost-efficient computing and dedicated blockspace, which is where L3s come into their own, allowing apps to bypass the competition for blockspace and scale according to their requirements. This announcement comes only a week after Conduit revealed a similar layer 2 rollup solution.
The most affordable plan permits the construction of a rollup on Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet. However, those who opt for the pricier $3,000/month plan can deploy on the mainnet, as per Conduit’s deployment app. This app allows users to select either Optimism’s OP Stack or Arbitrum Orbit as their rollup framework and Ethereum, Base, Zora, or Mode as the settlement layer where the transactions are verified. Users can also decide to have the transaction data of the rollup displayed on either Ethereum or Celestia.
Blockchain experts have welcomed the move, with Ethereum show host David Hoffman celebrating the “big day for the +1M rollups believers”, and Paradigm’s head of market development, Nick Martitsch, claiming that launching a rollup has never been simpler.
There have, however, been some concerns raised regarding the new ease with which rollups can be launched. Georgios Konstantopoulos, Paradigm's research partner, expressed that people may not fully understand the implications of Conduit's development. Despite these concerns, Conduit insists that these rollups can be rolled out with just a few clicks, no coding required.
Deployments on the testnet plan carry no cost but those who choose the mainnet plan must pay a gas fee for deployment of $8,150, or 2.79 Ether (ETH), at the current exchange rate. The rollout process takes around 15 minutes. Conduit will receive 7.5% of revenue from the layer 3 rollup. The company anticipates that these layer 3 solutions will reduce Ethereum and layer 2 transaction fees as they make block space more readily available.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin previously proposed that layer 3s could offer customizable functionality for users in a September 2022 post, though he was not in favor of simply stacking identical schemes. Rather, he supported a three-layer architecture where the second and third layers serve distinct roles.
