Bitcoin Developer Denies Role in Flagging Bitcoin Inscriptions as Cybersecurity Risk

Algoine News
Summary:
Luke Dashjr, a notable Bitcoin developer, has refuted claims suggesting he listed Bitcoin inscriptions as a cybersecurity risk on the US National Vulnerability Database's (NVD) Common Vulnerabilities and Exposure (CVE) list. The NVD recently assigned a medium base severity ranking to Bitcoin Inscriptions and the debate continues on social media about the nature of Bitcoin inscriptions. The Bitcoin network has been experiencing increased transaction congestion due to a surge in nonfungible token (NFT) inscriptions and minting of BRC-20 tokens.
Prominent Bitcoin developer, Luke Dashjr, has dismissed claims that he identified Bitcoin inscriptions as a cybersecurity threat on the US National Vulnerability Database’s (NVD) list of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposure (CVE). In a Dec. 6 post on the social media platform X (previously Twitter), Dashjr sparked disagreement by alleging that Ordinals Protocol and BRC-20 originators' use of Inscriptions, a method for embedding data on satoshis, was leveraging a vulnerability in Bitcoin Core to overwhelm the blockchain. This caused a stir when, just three days later, Bitcoin inscriptions showed up on the U.S. CVE list as part of the NVD. The listing portrayed Bitcoin inscriptions as a cyber risk that enabled the creation of the Ordinals Protocol in 2022. Regardless, despite his clear criticism of Bitcoin Ordinals, Dashjr assured Cointelegraph he had no involvement in listing inscriptions on the CVE. It's important to bear in mind that the CVE is set up for developers to report vulnerabilities and is typically included as long as the CVE Assignment Team believes it's in the public's best interest to know. On Dec. 11, the NVD revised their listing to assign Bitcoin Inscriptions a base severity ranking of “5.3 Medium.” As defined by software company Atlassian, a medium score denotes a vulnerability that offers very limited network access or complex denial of service attacks. A rating of 5.3 has been granted to the Bitcoin Inscription listing by the CVE list. One key consideration influencing the 5.3 score allocation was the minimal impact the vulnerability could have on Bitcoin's network availability, Dashjr noted. Nevertheless, he suggested that the ranking might not fully reflect the potential long-term fallout. The Bitcoin inscription controversy is still a hot topic on social media. While some Bitcoin users view inscriptions as an unnecessary burden on the network, proponents of Ordinals like Taproot Wizards co-founder Udi Wertheimer see Ordinals as pivotal to Bitcoin's future trajectory of acceptance and revenue appreciation. The Bitcoin network has been suffering from increased congestion over recent months, driven primarily by a surge in popularity for Ordinals nonfungible token (NFT) inscriptions and the minting of BRC-20 tokens. Data from mempool.space shows a backlog of more than 275,000 transactions, with resulting increases in average transaction costs from about $1.50 to around $14. Should the so-called Inscriptions bug be addressed, it might limit the use of Ordinals inscriptions on the Bitcoin network in the future.
