As per the announcement, passengers can utilize the app to scan their boarding passes and exchange them for NFT trading cards. To mint and transfer their Uptrip NFTs, users need to connect their crypto wallets within the app. Completing specific NFT collections enables passengers to unlock rewards like flight upgrades, access to airport lounges, frequent flyer status, or award miles. Kristian Weymar, an executive at Lufthansa Innovation Hub, mentioned in the announcement that while Web3 is still in its early stages, users are intrigued but hesitant to fully embrace it. Weymar emphasized that the project aims to make Web3 accessible to Lufthansa's customers. Christopher Siegloch, the head of program development at Miles & More, noted that Uptrip has garnered significant interest, with over 20,000 sign-ups and 200,000 NFT trading cards already minted.
Earlier this year, Lufthansa expressed its interest in incorporating Web3 technologies into its operations. In an interview with Cointelegraph on May 12, Johannes Walter from Lufthansa Group stated that decentralization and tokenization present new business model opportunities. It is worth mentioning that other players in the airline industry have also announced their plans to integrate Web3 into their business strategies. In 2022, Emirates, the largest airline company in the United Arab Emirates, revealed its intentions to accept Bitcoin payments and launch NFTs.
