Zilliqa Network Restores Full Functionality Following Technical Disruptions in Block Production
Summary:
The Zilliqa network recently faced technical disruptions that affected block production on its mainnet, however, full functionality was restored as of May 10. The network was back online after the Zilliqa team worked aggressively to diagnose and resolve the issue. Meanwhile, the investigating for the root cause of these disruptions is still ongoing. A similar disruption in block production was faced by the network in December 2023, causing a significant dip in daily transactions. The team continues to work on enhancements to prevent such issues and thanks the community for their support.
The Zilliqa system recently confronted a series of technical glitches that hampered its block production on the mainnet. Notwithstanding, as of May 10, the network is fully operational, although the source of these issues is still being examined. The Zilliqa crew informed the network's users that everything is back up following short-term interruptions in block generation on the mainnet. As the infrastructure crew keeps an eye on the steadiness of the network, they are also striving to identify why these recent disruptions occurred.
Ever since disruptions were initially noticed on May 8, due to slow block generation rates, the Zilliqa technical team have been relentlessly working for nearly two days to prevent any additional interruptions. On May 9, at roughly 9:30 am UTC, Zilliqa's technical crew spotted a malfunction that yielded a null value "instead of a node's RLP following a possible invalid database lookup." To address this problem, the team has developed internal rehearsal networks to replicate the issue and experiment with bug solutions. This also ensured that potential fixes were tested within a secured setting before being applied on Testnet and mainnet deployments.
By roughly 2:30 pm UTC on May 9, the technical team managed to regain full operation through a software patch, which was coincided with the rollout of the Zilliqa version 9.3.4 network upgrade. The team stated that this upgrade comprises several enhancements for EVM compatibility and extended their apologies for the inconvenience faced by their users and the Zilliqa community due to the disruption.
Notwithstanding the successful patch and upgrade initiation, Zilliqa's mainnet faced another slump in block production on May 9 around 7:05PM UTC. To deal with this, the team improved debugging processes to better discern and tackle the underlying reason for the disruption.
In the past too, in December 2023, Zilliqa's block production had suffered due to technical problems wherein an "interruption to block production" led to a nearly 50% drop in daily Zilliqa blockchain transactions โ falling from about 61,000 to 30,906.
The investigation into the root cause of the recent network interruptions is ongoing with the Zilliqa team expressing gratitude towards their community for their "patience and support during the resolution" of the issue.
