YouTube Tests New AI Tools for Comment Management and Real-Time Viewer Engagement

Algoine News
Summary:
YouTube is trialling two AI features aimed at improving the viewer and creator experience on its platform. The first one is designed to categorize comments into manageable topics while the second takes the form of a chatbot to engage with viewers in real-time. These features are experimental and currently available only to a limited number of users and videos. The roll-out to more Premium subscribers on Android devices is planned over the coming weeks.
YouTube is experimenting with two artificial intelligence (AI) features aimed at enhancing the experience for both creators and viewers on their platform. As described in a YouTube Help post, the first experiment is an AI tool designed to categorize extensive comment sections of long videos into manageable topics. This feature enables creators to sort their comments according to subject, highlight certain comments, and even remove comments related to particular subjects. This pilot feature is operational and is applicable to a limited number of English videos that have substantial comment sections. YouTube Premium subscribers can experience this as part of YouTube's incentive program of experimental features. The second initiative is rather more elaborate and takes shape as an AI chatbot, seemingly comparable to Google's Bard or OpenAI's ChatGPT. Its purpose is to engage with viewers while they watch videos. YouTube explains that this experimental conversational AI tool can provide responses to queries about the video being watched, suggest related content, and more without causing any interruption to the ongoing playback. For certain educational videos, the chatbot enhances user interaction by curating quizzes. At present, this feature is available for a limited group and a specified set of videos. YouTube divulges it will gradually extend this feature to reach more Premium subscribers in the U.S using Android devices over the coming period. YouTube has not provided a definite stance regarding large scale execution of these features and cautioned its users that these developments are under the 'experimental' label and might not always yield accurate results. This is an exciting development since public testing of AI systems interacting with audio/video content and the general public at large remains a fairly untapped domain. It remains to be seen how YouTube will grapple with the unpredictable results that can arise from generative AI systems.
