Worldcoin Unveils 'World ID 2.0', Enhances User Authenticity on Various Platforms

Algoine News
Summary:
Worldcoin introduced an updated version of its “World ID 2.0” feature, broadening its integration with platforms including Shopify, Mercado Libre, Reddit, and Telegram. This allows users to confirm their authenticity without disclosing excess personal data. Additionally, the upgrade lets app developers choose from various authentication levels based on security needs. Despite the controversy over its highest-level security authentication which involves an iris scan, Worldcoin insisted it only retains the proof of the scan, not the scan itself.
Worldcoin unveiled an upgraded version of their World ID feature titled “World ID 2.0” on December 12. The updated version broadens its interactions with platforms like Shopify, Mercado Libre, Reddit, and Telegram, thus enabling users to attest their human authenticity on these networks. This addition supplements existing connections with platforms such as Discord, Talent Protocol, and Okta's Auth0. According to the report, app designers can now select from an array of authentication degrees ranging from "lite" to "max." This progression is designed to offer more utilitarian options for users based on the security demands of a given application, ensuring they are not divulging excessive personal information. For instance, a high-security-demanding app might necessitate users presenting an orb-verified ID, while an app emphasizing convenience might suffice with a "Device Auth" World ID tied to the user's mobile device. Worldcoin proposed that these novel features would curb losses instigated by bots without obligating users to disclose personal information to the apps in use. Reflecting on a CNBC report, Worldcoin highlighted that fraud returns, bots, and coupon stacking collectively cause annual losses of $100 billion to retailers. Worldcoin was initially unveiled in July. Controversy later ensued due to its strongest authentication level that entails scanning a user's iris to generate a zero-knowledge proof. Critics argued that this process might expose biometric data. However, Worldcoin defended its approach, maintaining that the proof of the iris scan is the only data retained and not the scan itself.
