WalletConnect Launches Web3Inbox: A New Blockchain Notification App with Future Messaging Feature
Summary:
WalletConnect, a Web3 developer, has unveiled a notification app called Web3Inbox. The platform allows digital wallet owners to receive updates from blockchain projects of their choice, with no requirement for personal contact information. Users can opt in or out of notifications from a variety of projects currently available on the app. The app is compatible with most wallets and can be downloaded on any device. Future plans include adding an instant messaging feature. The concept of inter-wallet messaging and notification is gaining traction in the cryptocurrency community.
Blockchain developer WalletConnect introduced a notification app called "Web3Inbox" for individuals interested in blockchain-related projects, as stated in a release dated Jan. 16. The new app enables wallet owners to subscribe to updates from their favourite projects, all by signing using their digital wallet. The application does not request any personal contact information such as phone numbers or emails.
Web3 projects currently utilize an array of Web2 applications, like Discord, Telegram, and X (previously known as Twitter), for communication with their enthusiasts. As per the release, Web3Inbox currently hosts ten different Web3 projects including PancakeSwap, Chainspot, Space ID, Guild, Snapshot, TrustaLabs, Galxe, Sovereign Nature Initiative, Peanut Protocol, and Robots.Farm.
WalletConnect's top executives, Jess Houlgrave and Kirby Horvitz, shared more details about the app's functionality with Cointelegraph. Houlgrave reported that the Web3Inbox lets users link their Web3 wallet and receive notifications all in one place. They can choose to receive or decline various types of notifications from several applications and products.
Houlgrave revealed that various projects have adopted different methods of engaging with their users via the app, such as voting reminders, NFT marketplace offers, and gaming challenge announcements.
Web3Inbox can be downloaded on any device, both desktop and mobile using a web browser, and can even be pinned to the home screen. It can be linked with a wide range of wallets as it merges with WalletConnect’s software development kit popular with most mobile wallet apps.
Eventually, WalletConnect aims to install an instant messaging capability within Web3Inbox, with the focus initially set on notifications to reduce the risk of spamming. According to Houlgrave, the challenge is making this in a peer-to-peer context, which is why it's coming up in the next phase.
Inter-wallet notification and messaging concepts have been attracting attention in the crypto world recently. In August 2023, OpenChat, based on Internet Computer Protocol, started a Discord-like "Communities" feature that allows wallet holders to log in without handing over personal information. In June, Grill.chat, a Subsocial-based protocol, launched a similar feature with chat rooms that could be embedded on a project's official website.
