Volkswagen, a leading German carmaker, has announced its plans to employ OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, in its vehicles, with implementation expected by mid-2024. The company showcased cars equipped with a ChatGPT-managed voice assistant at the CES 2024 trade fair in Las Vegas on January 9. The roll-out of these cars is anticipated to occur in North America and Europe by the second quarter of 2024. Volkswagen's embedded voice assistant, supported by ChatGPT, will facilitate active dialogues with vehicle occupants. This will enable the assistant to comprehend and respond to a wide array of unconventional commands, such as adjusting the heat when it hears statements like "I am chilly." In addition, it can deliver details about the closest Indian restaurant when it hears phrases like "I crave butter chicken." According to Kai Gruenitz, a Volkswagen board member responsible for technological advancement, the ChatGPT service will permit vehicle occupants to alter different car features without the need for physical buttons. He further added: "Our consumers have no interest in making manual adjustments to their seating. They prefer to use voice dialogue systems. What they truly desire is a smooth, instinctive car operational experience." The voice command function will be broadened to accommodate widespread third-party services, enabling users to engage with apps like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto button-free. Despite Volkswagen asserting that it is the first major carmaker to standardize the AI voice assistant feature, rivals such as General Motors and Mercedes-Benz have previously dabbled in ChatGPT. Volkswagen's ChatGPT-enabled voice service was co-developed with the U.S. software firm Cerence.
