UK telecom giant, Vodafone, is planning to introduce blockchain technology to its smartphone users by merging crypto wallets with SIM cards. This bold step is part of a larger financial strategy involving Vodafone Idea Ltd. – an independent firm based in India where the Vodafone Group holds a 45% stake – which is set to accumulate nearly $3 billion in debt, including $1.8 billion in loans over the coming two years. Speaking to Yahoo Finance Future Focus recently, Vodafone's Blockchain Head, David Palmer, detailed the company's intent to incorporate blockchain technology within smartphone sim cards, stating that they project over 20 billion operational mobile phones by 2030. He further highlighted their plan to connect the sim card to digital identity and blockchains, while leveraging the sim cards' inherent cryptography for that connection. Palmer anticipates around eight billion smartphones in circulation by 2030, forecasting a rise in crypto wallets to 5.6 billion within the same period – equivalent to nearly 70% of the world's population. Even with the complex fiscal dealings linked to India's Vodafone Idea Ltd., which recently divested $2.2 billion of shares ahead of a reported $3 billion debt raising scheme, Vodafone Group has had an active 2024. As previously noted by Cointelegraph, Vodafone embarked on a decade-long strategic collaboration with Microsoft, aimed at delivering generative AI services to Vodafone's user base. On announcing the partnership, Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, underscored the transformative potential of his company's AI solutions, asserting that they would "unlock massive new opportunities for every organization and every industry around the world." This is not the first instance of a firm attempting to unite mobile phone and blockchain technology. In 2019, a US start-up, VaultTel, declared its goal of developing a physical wallet capable of being inserted into a smartphone's SIM slot. In related news, Vodafone recently auctioned the world's inaugural SMS 'Merry Christmas' as an NFT for charity purposes.
