Virtual Reality Trains Astronauts for Life Onboard Unbuilt Lunar Station, Gateway

Algoine News
Summary:
NASA and SpaceX are using virtual reality to train astronauts for life aboard the yet-to-be-built lunar space station, Gateway. Expected to orbit the moon by 2025, Gateway will serve as a multipurpose outpost supporting lunar surface missions, scientific exploration, and further deep space travels. This forms a part of the Artemis program, aiming to establish a crewed Moon base as a crucial step towards landing humans on Mars.
Amidst our forays into the metaverse for asset trading and virtual adventures, astronauts from NASA and SpaceX are leveraging it as a training ground for their impending journey to an unbuilt lunar space station. This crew will set the precedent of human habitation in deep space, as they will operate a developing space station named "Gateway." In a previous blog post, NASA depicted Gateway as a solar-powered spaceship, futuristic science lab, and off-Earth residence for international astronauts. Astronauts typically honed their skills for new ventures through physical simulators and computer models. However, the advent of novel virtual reality gear and superior spatial computing techniques now allows those planning to dwell in deep space to acquire requisite abilities in a captivating three-dimensional medium. Image source: NASAThe U.S. expects the maiden flight of Gateway, equipped with crucial power and propulsion systems, to orbit the Moon no earlier than 2025. The scope of it reaches beyond its terrestrial inception, as NASA says, Gateway will function as the platform for the Artemis program. This program, led by America, envisages constructing a crewed Moon base, a significant stride towards landing humans on Mars. In NASA's words, “Gateway holds high significance for Artemis missions led by NASA, intending to return to the Moon and sketch the route for the initial human missions to Mars. This compact space station will revolve around the Moon acting as a versatile outpost. It will assist lunar surface missions, serve as a haven for scientific pursuits, and a launching pad for continued deep space travels." The astronauts assigned with the responsibility of Gateway's maintenance and operation will encounter the unprecedented challenge of becoming the first crew of an orbital space station to exist and serve in deep space. They will be located nearly 386,243 kilometers away from Earth at the farthest. In comparison, the International Space Station, which has been operational since 1998, inhabits an average Earth-proximity of about 400 kilometers.
