Virginia Tech Study Reveals Geographic Biases in AI Tool ChatGPT's Responses on Environmental Justice

Algoine News
Summary:
Researchers from Virginia Tech have pointed out potential biases in the AI tool ChatGPT's treatment of environmental justice issues across various counties. The study suggests that the tool provides location-specific information more readily available to densely populated states, while less populated regions lack equal access. In light of these findings, experts have called for further research on these biases. This follows recent revelations of ChatGPT potentially showing political biases.
A recent study issued by Virginia Tech, a US-based university, highlights possible biases in the AI tool, ChatGPT's responses relating to issues of environmental justice across varying counties. The report claims that ChatGPT shows limitations in its ability to provide location-specific data about environmental injustice. It also identified a pattern suggesting the information was more easily accessible to larger states with dense populations. In densely populated states like Delaware and California, there were negligible portions, less than 1 percent, of the population residing in counties that weren't receiving distinct information. However, areas with smaller population densities were not granted the same access. For instance, rural states like Idaho and New Hampshire, had over 90 percent of its population residing in counties which could not obtain location-specific information, the study discloses. The report includes comments from a geography lecturer at Virginia Tech, Kim, pointing out a need for additional research as biases continue to emerge. "Our findings show that there are existing geographical biases in the ChatGPT model, thus more research is needed," Kim pronounced. A map indicating regions of the US population without location-specific information on environmental justice issues was also included in the academic paper. This news follows recent revelations that ChatGPT seems to exhibit potential political biases. On August 25, Cointelegraph published a report by UK and Brazil-based researchers stating that large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT, can produce text with errors and biases, which can deceive readers and help magnify political biases conveyed by mainstream media.
