Verkle Trees were identified as a vital component of the roadmap laid by Buterin in late 2022. He encapsulated the ongoing development process in five key terms – The Merge, Surge, Verge, Purge and Splurge, each depicting a different milestone in the project's development. Verkle Trees, which fall under the "Verge" stage of the Ethereum's roadmap, are intended to enhance data storage and reduce the size of nodes. The technical specifications of Verkle Trees were outlined by Buterin in the Ethereum Improvement Proposal document published in 2022. Much like Merkle trees that summarize all transactions in a block, providing data proof for a user verifying its genuineness, Verkle Trees streamline proof size. In the structure of Verkle Trees, nodes use a kind of hash known as vector commitment that is transferred to sub-nodes, bringing about sustained, significant advantages for the Ethereum network. Verkle Trees aim to deliver statelessness to Ethereum, which would mean that nodes validating blocks wouldn't have to maintain the Ethereum “state” anymore. By allowing for reduced proof sizes contained within each block of the Ethereum blockchain, Verkle Trees enable nodes to authenticate any block using the data stored inside the block itself. The adoption of Verkle Trees is predicted to introduce various new functional capacities, including a decrease in hardware requirements to operate Ethereum nodes, thereby fostering greater decentralization of the network. Additionally, new nodes could join the network almost instantly, syncing swiftly with the network.
