Unstoppable Domains Launches Messaging System for Web3 Usernames, Expanding Communication Capabilities

Algoine News
Summary:
Unstoppable Domains introduces messaging system for Web3 usernames, enabling users to communicate across apps using the XMTP protocol. Messages are encrypted and preserved, even if Unstoppable Domains ceases operations. The integration expands messaging capabilities for usernames registered with Unstoppable Domains. Future plans include integration with Push Protocol for notifications. Previous partnerships with Binance.US and Ethereum Name Service (ENS) have also been significant.
Unstoppable Domains (UD) has introduced a messaging system specifically designed for Web3 usernames, as announced by principal engineer Aaron Quirk. Users who own .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, or any other UD-registered usernames can now communicate with each other across various apps using the XMTP protocol. This includes apps such as the UD iOS app and website, Coinbase Wallet, and Lens protocol apps like Lenster and Buttrfly. Although the Android version of UD will not initially support messaging, the feature will be added soon. The integration of the messaging system relies on the extensible message transport protocol (XMTP), an independent protocol that ensures message encryption and delivery to recipients. This means that even if UD were to cease operations in the future, users will still have access to their messages. The announcement emphasized the preservation and accessibility of messages, regardless of the status of Unstoppable Domains. Web3 usernames have been in existence since 2017, providing crypto users with the ability to associate their long and complex crypto addresses with simpler and more memorable names. For example, the challenging-to-recall address 0xd8dA6BF26964aF9D7eEd9e03E53415D37aA96045 can be replaced by the user-friendly "Vitalik.eth." While these usernames have primarily been used to receive payments in the past, a few projects are now expanding their applications, including messaging. Coinbase Wallet, for example, launched its own instant messaging system on July 12, enabling users to communicate using their .eth or .cb.id usernames. This Coinbase Wallet feature was also integrated with the Lens social media protocol, thanks to both projects utilizing XMTP. However, this integrated system did not extend to usernames registered through Unstoppable Domains, such as those ending in .crypto or .polygon. Quirk's announcement revealed that this limitation has now been resolved. Users of Lens apps or Coinbase Wallet can now effectively message each other using their Unstoppable Domains usernames, as well as other available methods. Quirk further mentioned that the company plans to integrate with Push Protocol in the near future, enabling username owners to receive notifications from Web3 projects. These projects will have the ability to message users through the Unstoppable Domains app or website. Unstoppable Domains made headlines on April 26 when it partnered with Binance.US, allowing its users to register usernames ending in .BinanceUS. Additionally, on July 17, a truce was called between Unstoppable Domains and rival Ethereum Name Service (ENS), allowing ENS .eth names to be sold in the UD store for the first time.
