On December 16, the peer-to-peer marketplace NFT Trader was exposed to a cybersecurity attack, leading to the theft of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) equivalent to millions of dollars. NFT Trader acknowledged the attack via X (previously known as Twitter) and notified that the hackers targeted outdated smart contracts, urging users to cancel delegations to two specific addresses. The stolen NFTs included at least 13 tokens from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, 37 from the Bored Ape collection, alongside tokens from VeeFriends and World of Women NFTs. According to Revoke.cash, the combined value of these stolen NFTs amounts to nearly $3 million. The event was followed by unfounded rumors and misinformation on various social media channels. It is currently still not determined the exact number of hackers involved in exploiting the security vulnerability. In an open communication, one of the offenders credited another individual with the original exploit before admitting to collecting the "residual garbage". The said offender also requested a ransom for the return of the stolen NFTs. The offending party also confessed to having limited technical abilities and demanded a 10% reward in Ether (ETH) for the return of the stolen NFTs. Furthermore, in a peculiar twist, one of the victims received a rare NFT as well as 31 ETH (approximately $70,680 at the current rate) from the robber. The bewildered victim announced this on X, expressing shock at the bizarre situation. Notably, NFT creator J1mmy.eth had earlier created 420 Bored Apes tokens that were valued at a staggering $150 million.
