Uniswap Labs, a significant name in the cryptocurrency industry, is in the running for an Emmy Award for its recent acquisition, Crypto: The Game (CTG). This online survival game has gained colossal traction among 'degen gamers' and is on the watchlist for the Emmy nomination under the Outstanding Emerging Media Program category. CTG follows the format of a TV reality show and features ten teams comprising of 80 players each, who partake in daily "survival challenges" like taking part in arcade games or winning a digital treasure hunt. To participate, players pay a 0.1 Ether (ETH) entry fee, with the final survivor winning the collection of these fees, apart from a 10% charge that supports the game. The eliminated tribes must vote out a member, and players can become immune by posting about the game on social media. On the game's last day, the removed players vote to select the final survivor.
The game, which runs in real-time on a 24-hour clock on the Base blockchain, has each season lasting ten days. Fans can track the game on X or Farcaster and a dedicated podcast. Debuting in January, CTG is now preparing for its third season. Season 1 saw the winner walking away with roughly $150,000, while the second season's top prize was an impressive $274,000, tied to the rise in the value of ETH. Season 2 saw its non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which provided access to the game, being sold out in just 15 minutes.
These NFTs can be re-sold, with the new owner taking the seller's spot in the current game. Dylan Abruscato, the game's lead developer, cited to Fortune that CTG players consist of the crypto X community, crypto influencers and, other market participants, in addition to 10%-15% newbies who were previously not involved in the crypto scene.
On June 11, right before the Emmy nominations were announced, Uniswap Labs bought CTG for an undisclosed mixture of cash, cryptocurrency, and equity. Abruscato and the entire development crew were absorbed into Uniswap to guide the launch of the third season and create additional interactive experiences for the crypto community. CTG will compete against an assortment of potential Emmy entries, including virtual reality experiences, Verizon's Catch My iPhone game, The Billboard Music Awards, and contributions from personalities like Eli Roth, Jean-Michel Jarre, Lucy Liu, and the characters from the Claymation series, Wallace & Gromit. The voting process, executed by a "peer group", will continue until June 25.
