US Launches AISIC to Bolster Safety Standards and Innovation in AI

Algoine News
Summary:
The US Department of Commerce has launched the AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), aiming to bring together major tech industry players, academics, government researchers, and civil society organizations. Spearheaded by President Biden, the consortium will focus on setting safety standards and protecting innovative ecosystems by developing risk management guidelines and watermarking synthetic content. With over 200 members including Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple, AISIC represents the largest assembly of test and evaluation teams to date. Its creation, a follow-up to the AI Safety Institute establishment in late 2023, underlines the US's commitment to leading the development and execution of secure and responsible AI.
The AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) has been launched by the US Department of Commerce on Feb. 8, bringing together various stakeholders from the tech industry. Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, expressed that the consortium will bridge academics, AI developers and users, industry and government researchers, and civil society organizations, with a goal to cultivate a setting fostering safe and reliable artificial intelligence (AI). She emphasized the pivotal role of the U.S. government in outlining standards and designing tools necessary for mitigating risks associated with AI and exploiting its tremendous potential. The consortium, as directed by President Biden, is driven by twin objectives: ensuring safety standards and safeguarding our innovative ecosystem. AISIC is tasked with creating guidelines for various procedures such as red-teaming, evaluating AI capabilities, risk management, safety and security, as well as watermarking synthetic content – an issue of critical importance. The consortium boasts over 200 members encompassing leading names in the sector including Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple, OpenAI, Anthropic, Adobe, Nvidia, GitHub, the Frontier Model Forum, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IMB and numerous others. As per the formal announcement, this equates to “the largest assembly of test and evaluation teams set up so far,” involving state and local governments, and non-profits. These entities will cooperate with organizations from “like-minded nations” to define industry standards. This initiative is a follow-up to the establishment of the U.S.’s AI Safety Institute (USAISI), resulting from President Biden’s AI safety executive order issued in late October 2023. Raimondo asserted that Biden's executive order will “guarantee” the U.S. continues to lead the development and execution of secure and responsible AI. Bruce Reed, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff, conveyed that keeping pace with AI necessitates a cohesive and expedient strategy involving all sectors – government, private sector, and academia. Reed recently held a meeting of the White House AI Council on Jan. 30 to review the implementation status of actions emanating from the executive order. A fact sheet update revealed the U.S. has “achieved or surpassed the numerous prerequisites that were scheduled for the initial three months after the executive order’s issuance.”
