The announcement was a follow-up to a talk delivered by Jude R. Sunderbruch, Executive Director of the DOD's Cyber Crime Center, at the Google Defense Forum. In essence, this proposed "fight" against "counter-AI" alludes to the process of detecting and obstructing attempts to manipulate AI systems while simultaneously developing AI mechanisms that can resist such infractions.
"The opponents are perpetually attempting to breach our protections and defenses. They operate at the speed of light on fiber-optic networks and can switch instantly from one virtual private server (VPS) to another. Therefore, it's crucial we take advantage of AI to outsmart them," Sunderbruch expressed.
According to him, this "fight" will bring foremost queries about the definition of the "truth" to the table. Further, he chose to describe this situation not as an "arms race" but as a "strategic competition." A similar perspective was shared in the industry of software development when Meta's AI head, Yann LeCun, declared an "AI war" in December 2023.
The DOD expressed confidence in the preparedness of the United States for progress in the field of artificial intelligence. The Department's short-term objective involves employing existing AI tools to process information combined with other data available to the government.
In relation to this, the DOD announced its intention to improve AI models with "multiple useful data types" and implement AI technology for threat and error analysis. Army Colonel Richard Leach, Intelligence Director for the Defense Information Systems Agency, also present at the panel, emphasized the significance of AI in managing the overwhelming flood of data made available to decision-makers.
"Allow AI to isolate critical data and possibly perform rudimentary analysis. This will enable analysts to dedicate their efforts to complex problems, thereby conserving time, resources, and manpower," stated Leach. He went on to stress the importance of AI in staying abreast of the dynamic digital world.
