UK Pumping £300 Million into AI Supercomputers for Enhanced Safety in Future AI Models

Algoine News
Summary:
The UK government has announced a £300 million ($363.57 million) increase in funding for two artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers following the recent global "AI Safety Summit". Named the “AI Research Resource”, these supercomputers aim to facilitate the creation of safer advanced AI models. The two supercomputers, set to be operating by the summer of 2024, will significantly enhance the country’s existing AI research capabilities. The Isambard-AI, UK's fastest computer, will be developed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and equipped with advanced Nvidia AI chips, while the second computer, "Dawn", will be built in collaboration with Dell, employing Intel's AI chips. The move emphasizes the need for safe AI development, a sentiment echoed by US Vice President Kamala Harris at the summit.
On November 1st, at the conclusion of the first day of the international "AI Safety Summit", the United Kingdom declared a significant upgrade in funding for two advanced artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers, amounting to 300 million pounds ($363.57 million). Known as the “AI Research Resource”, the supercomputers aim to facilitate research into creating more secure advanced AI models, a prominent subject of discussion at the event. UK's Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, mentioned in a social media post that the increasing power of frontier AI models necessitated this investment to ensure UK’s scientific workforce are equipped with the necessary resources for creating the safest AI models. Emphasizing UK's leadership in AI safety, he announced that the fresh investment will fortify the country's ability to create sophisticated models using AI by harnessing advanced tools. Scheduled to function by the summer of 2024, the newly funded supercomputers will offer UK researchers a computing capacity more than 30 times greater than the nation’s existing largest public AI computing resources. The Isambard-AI, set to be the UK's fastest computer, will be built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and powered by 5,000 advanced Nvidia AI chips. Another machine, named “Dawn”, will be fabricated in partnership with Dell and will utilize 1,000 AI chips supplied by Intel. Earlier, in August, UK spent $130 million on AI chips. According to the announced plan, Isambard-AI will be capable of executing over 200 'petaflops', meaning 200 quadrillion calculations per second. US Vice President Kamala Harris, who was present on the summit's inaugural day, underscored in alignment with Sunak the importance of "collaborative focus on the prospects and uncertainties brought about by frontier AI". In her address to the attendees, Harris cautioned about the possibility of large-scale cyberattacks and AI-invented biochemical threats posing a risk to millions of lives, further stressing the immediate need for collective action on this issue. Harris' comments trailed closely behind the recent executive order on AI safety standards released by the Biden Administration.
