Trezor Warns Users of Major Security Breach Exposing 66,000 Customers' Data

Algoine News
Summary:
Trezor, a hardware wallet provider, has announced a significant security breach that exposed the contact details of approximately 66,000 users. The company detected unauthorized access to a third-party support portal and speculated users who have contacted Trezor's support team since December 2021 may have had their data breached. However, no funds or recovery seed phrases have been compromised. The company alerted affected users and cautioned them about potential phishing attacks. This incident underlines several security issues Trezor has faced in the past.
Trezor, a renowned hardware wallet, has issued an alert following a security infringement that laid bare the personal contact details of almost 66,000 users, as stated in their notice on January 20. Unlawful access to a third-party assistance portal was uncovered by Trezor on January 17. According to Trezor, clients who have liaised with the support group since December 2021 might have had their information tapped into during this breach. "While there's no solid confirmation, we deem it our duty to notify our impacted clients about the potential exposure of their contact details, putting them at a risk of phishing scams," Trezor commented. It was reported that all 66,000 affected individuals have been informed of the event via email. "We'd like to underscore that this incident did not compromise any user funds. The security of your Trezor device remains intact just as it was," they added. As it happens, 41 people received direct email communication from the culprit asking for sensitive information concerning their recovery seed. Additionally, eight users who registered with the same third-party's provisional discussion platform had their private contact details imperiled. Phishing is a category of cybercrime where perpetrators pose as a trusted authority to trick individuals into divulging sensitive data. It's a common means to acquire confidential details such as login data, credit card information, or other private data. As per Trezor, the breach has not led to the revelation of any recovery seed phrases. They also stated to have alerted the users who received such emails within an hour of the occurrence. "The potential leakage of email addresses could lead to harmful phishing attempts. However, at present, we haven't noticed any upsurge in phishing activity in the wake of this security event," they clarified. Trezor, a leading fabricator of cryptocurrency hardware wallets mainly known for its cold storage provisions for digital assets, has encountered several security incidents over time. Last year in March, it alerted users of a phishing gambit aimed at fraudulently acquiring investors’ money by coaxing them to input the wallet's recovery phrase on a bogus Trezor site. In yet another event, tricksters vending counterfeit Trezor hardware managed to seize command over the user's private keys.
