TikTok to Implement Auto-Labeling of AI-Generated Content in Fight Against Deepfakes

Algoine News
Summary:
TikTok, in a new announcement, plans to automatically label AI-generated content (AIGC). The platform is collaborating with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and will be using its technology, Content Credentials, to label content with metadata and identify AIGC. This feature, initially meant for images and videos, will gradually expand to label more content and eventually include audio content as well. TikTok also joins Adobe's Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and will collaborate with MediaWise and WITNESS to roll out media literacy resources. These efforts aim to provide users with the necessary tools to discern the authenticity of digital content.
TikTok has announced it will begin automatically labeling content created by artificial intelligence (AI), upon upload to the social networking app. The company revealed on May 9th that it is joining forces with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), and will pioneer the usage of its Content Credentials technology among media-sharing platforms. TikTok has, for over a year, been mandating that contributors identify realistic AI-produced content, along with anything created using TikTok's own AI features. This recent initiative introduces auto-tagging of AI-produced content advanced through other platforms, using technology that affixes metadata to content, allowing the platform to instantly identify and label AI-created materials. The company stated that the prevalence of auto-tagged AI content on TikTok will initially rise “gradually” and as soon as the Content Credential is applied to other platform's metadata, more content can be labeled. Currently, this functionality will only cover images and videos with plans to expand it to audio content in the near future. TikTok also reported it has become a member of Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI). Adobe's general counsel and chief trust officer, Dana Roa, stressed the necessity of facilitating methods for the public to confirm authenticity in an era where all digital content can be manipulated. Elsewhere, the latest in TikTok's advances is the launch of media literacy resources, crafted together with MediaWise and WITNESS, which will include twelve videos scheduled for release throughout the year. These videos will underline the need for universal media literacy skills and expound on how app features like AI labeling can offer deeper context to content. These efforts come in face of growing concerns over AI's potential to create increasingly realistic content, leading to increased proliferation of AI-engineered deepfakes. Recently in Hong Kong, an unauthorized cryptocurrency broker was exposed for fabricating ties with Elon Musk by posting AI-generated Musk videos and pictures on its online platforms. Days earlier, Berkshire Hathaway co-founder Warren Buffet drew parallels between AI's role in illegal financial practices and the invention of nuclear weapons, following his experience with a deepfake designed to convincingly emulate his appearance and mannerisms.
