From March onwards, Telegram channel owners across more than 100 nations can start earning monetary benefits from their work, once the advertising platform becomes accessible to all promoters. Telegram Founder and CEO, Pavel Durov announced on February 28 that channel owners would begin to collect half of the total ad revenue generated by Telegram via the ads displayed on their channels. Payments on the Telegram Ad Platform will be made solely through the TON blockchain. “Like with Telegram usernames on Fragment, we will sell advertisements and split the earnings with channel owners in Toncoin. This will result in a beneficial cycle where content creators can choose to cash their Toncoins or reinvest them to enhance and promote their channels," Durov explained. The TON blockchain’s accompanying TON coin displayed growth of 13.86% in the 24 hours up to 12:40 PM UTC, trading at $2.49. The coin saw an overall rise above 14% over the previous week. TON sits at a market cap of $8.6 billion, making it the 15th largest cryptocurrency on CoinMarketCap. Despite generating over 1 trillion monthly views, only around 10% of these are monetized via Telegram Ads, a privacy-concentrated promotional tool. Following WhatsApp, WeChat, and Facebook Messenger, Telegram is the fourth most used online messaging application globally. Data from Bankmycell reports approximately 196 million daily active users and 800 million monthly active users of Telegram. The TON blockchain continues to receive increased attention. In November last year, Animoca Brands announced it would become the TON blockchain’s largest validator and aim to develop blockchain-based games on Telegram. Animoca Brands chairman, Yat Siu, stated at the Next Block Expo event in Berlin, that a component of the validator agreement included buying an undisclosed sum of Toncoin, which the company has staked. Siu expressed enthusiasm for the TON wallet’s potential for mass onboarding, noting the 800 million users on Telegram using TON.
