Tanzanian Bitcoin Educator Climbs Kilimanjaro, Funding Trip via Cryptocurrency Donations

Algoine News
Summary:
A Tanzanian Bitcoin educator, known as Kweks, successfully ascended Africa’s highest peak, Kilimanjaro, funded entirely via Bitcoin and Nostr donations. Kweks crowdfunded over $1,700 in Bitcoin to cover the costs of the hike, which also served as a public announcement for his newly established Bitcoin education academy, the "Proof of Work Academy" (POWA), in Tanzania. Kweks' main goal of this venture was educational, demonstrating Bitcoin’s potential and introducing new people to the cryptocurrency. Despite challenges with converting Bitcoin to local currency due to the absence of exchanges in Tanzania, Kweks is committed to making Bitcoin education relevant to the local population.
A Tanzania-based educator in Bitcoin (BTC) has successfully climbed Africa's tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro, with his entire journey financed by Bitcoin and Nostr contributions. The unnamed educator, known as Kweks, held aloft Bitcoin and NOSTR flags atop Kilimanjaro. From crowdfunding, Kweks managed to collect more than $1,700 worth of Bitcoin (0.0018 BTC) to foot his hiking costs. This endeavor was also intended to mark the establishment of a new Bitcoin educational institute in Tanzania. Kweks and his wife, who have recently relocated to a Tanzanian city, have inaugurated a study center named "Proof of Work Academy", or POWA. The name POWA is a playful reference to Bitcoin's consensus protocol (proof-of-work), but it also alludes to the Swahili term "Poah", implying something is cool or fresh. To advertise the new institute and to subtly indicate his preference for decentralized protocols - including Bitcoin and Nostr - Kweks financed his climb to almost 6,000 meters using satoshis or sats - Bitcoin's smallest fraction. Bitcoin Lightning Network contributions poured in from across the globe via fundraising on Geyser Fund and through Zapraising, a Bitcoin Lightning Network crowdfunding platform via Nostr. Throughout the ascent, Kweks kept his supporters posted on his progress via X, Nostr, and WhatsApp. While the funds collected were significant in terms of covering the climbing expenses, the main cause was educational. Kweks had the idea to use the climb as a case study to demonstrate Bitcoin's potential and introduce people new to the concept. This climb also signaled to the local populace that a global network of Nostr users and generous Bitcoin enthusiasts were eager to back Kweks’ ascent and his educational efforts in Tanzania. However, turning Bitcoin into hard cash remains a challenge due to the absence of operations from exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini in Tanzania. But Kweks believes that the key to promoting Bitcoin education is speaking in terms that resonate with locals. By relating to their difficulties in making ends meet, Kweks believes they can understand how Bitcoin could be a beneficial tool for them. In addition, POWA is continually offering free educational sessions to the Tanzanian community around Kilimanjaro. Kweks also continues to distribute knowledgeable resources on Nostr and X.
