Takashi Murakami Considers Halting NFTs; Danny Casale Wins Lawsuit; Krapopolis Set to Air on FOX
Summary:
Prominent Japanese artist Takashi Murakami contemplates ceasing NFT production after launching two collections since late 2021. Meanwhile, NFT artist Danny Casale wins a lawsuit against DigiArt over a contract dispute relating to profit-sharing, and Krapopolis, the NFT-based animated series from Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon, is set to premiere on FOX this month. In Australia, rural digital artist Ben Fowler leverages NFTs to expand his global audience reach, while other news reports the potential reform in Bitcoin Ordinals's numbering system and Proof of Play's $33 million funding to create Web3 games.
Esteemed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami has hinted that he may cease producing nonfungible tokens (NFTs). Having entered the NFT arena in late 2021, Murakami, a revered figure in art circles since the late '80s, has rolled out two NFT collections so far: Clone X in partnership with RTFKT in December 2021, and Murakami.Flowers in May 2022. However, while speaking at his recent solo exhibition at the Asian Art Museum, he intimated that he might be finished with releasing NFTs.
The Murakami.Flowers project in particular tested the artist's patience as its release was postponed for better refinement. After its eventual launch in May 2022, the sales and prices remained flat leading Murakami to express regret to those that purchased the NFTs. Nevertheless, the project has produced a secondary trading volume of 26,713 Ether (ETH), equivalent to $42.52 million, despite the downturn in crypto and NFT markets. Its NFT floor price stands at 0.36 ETH ($573), based on OpenSea data.
Outside of Murakami's sphere, NFT artist Danny Casale, also touted as Coolman Coffeedan, has emerged victorious from a lawsuit over profit-sharing with digital art curators DigiArt. The case revolved around an alleged violation of contract terms by Casale when he initiated an NFT project, Coolman’s Universe, independently. Despite DigiArt's accusations, they failed to clarify any specific financial damage or enforce the contract until months after its infringement. Consequently, Judge Wendy Berger from the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida dismissed the case in Casale's favor.
In television, the much-anticipated NFT-based animated series Krapopolis from Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is all set to premiere. Scheduled to air on FOX after its announcement in June 2021, the first two episodes will go live on September 24, becoming part of FOX’s Animation Domination series along with The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Bob’s Burgers from October 1.
Krapopolis is a humorous take on life in ancient Greece featuring a dysfunctional family comprising humans, gods, and monsters. The linked NFTs, named “Krap Chickens,” reflect the artistic style of the series. These NFTs offer holders exclusive privileges, rewards, content, and experiences apart from voting rights on specific aspects of the show.
Meanwhile, in rural Victoria, Australia, digital artist Ben Fowler is using NFTs as a platform to extend his audience reach globally. Despite being based almost four hours from urban cities like Melbourne, NFTs have helped boost Fowler's career. Asserting that NFTs empower regional artists and creatives, he shared that his artwork was sold within a few days thanks to NFT technology.
More Nifty News reports that Bitcoin Ordinals’s creator, Casey Rodarmor, is considering changing the coding protocol’s numbering format for simplicity. Proof of Play, spearheaded by Farmville’s co-creator Amitt Mahajan, has managed to raise $33 million to develop Web3 games, as announced on September 21. Joining him in this endeavour is Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear, serving on the board.
