Developers of AI technology like OpenAI, Microsoft, Google and music streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music were among the companies addressed in the letter. It discouraged AI developers from engaging in unauthorized data mining and implored streaming service providers to revise their terms of service to ban the mining and training of their content. Referring to the AI developers, Sony cited their operational mechanisms and disclosed details about their AI systems claiming that they may have potentially utilized Sony's content without permission for the development or sale of AI technologies. Sony strictly forbids the use of any "automated analysis methods geared to decipher text and data digitally in order to generate insights, including patterns, trends, and correlations". By the subsequent week, the developers were asked to furnish details of all the content used while training their models. Reports suggest that Sony executives are alarmed that large volumes of their music might have been illegally copied and are intent on establishing the initial legal recourse.
