Solana Labs Refutes CertiK's Claims of Security Flaws in Saga Phone

Algoine News
Summary:
Solana Labs has dismissed claims made by blockchain security firm CertiK concerning a supposed security vulnerability in Solana's Saga phone. CertiK had stated that a "bootloader unlock" attack could potentially permit a harmful actor to set up a concealed backdoor on the device. Solana insists that circumventing this requires several steps after phone access is obtained, thus preventing unwanted unlocking. It underscored that any attempt to unlock the bootloader leads to an automatic device wipeout—a warning users receive several times in the unlocking process. These assertions were made against a backdrop of the Saga phone's price reduction, following declined sales.
Solana Labs has refuted claims made by blockchain safety company, CertiK, about a presumed security failings in Solana’s crypto-active Saga phone. On the former Twitter platform, X, CertiK declared on 15th November that the Saga phone housed a high-risk “bootloader unlock”, theoretically enabling a harmful infiltrator to establish a concealed backdoor on the phone. The report asserted a steady dedication to augmenting security measures. CertiK's report to Cointelegraph suggested the bootloader unlock would let a perpetrator physically hack into the phone to insert a bespoke firmware that housed a root backdoor. This could presumably lead to the breaching of confidential data on the phone, including private crypto keys. Solana Labs, however, maintains that CertiK’s allegations are baseless and that no legitimate threat to the Saga phone was uncovered in the video. The tech company clarified that unlocking the bootloader and inserting bespoke firmware would demand numerous stages, only possible after unlocking the phone with the user's security code or fingerprint. Unlocking the bootloader clears the device—users are warned repeatedly about this while unlocking it, ruling out the chance of the procedure being done without the user's knowledge or consent. Furthermore, anyone ignoring the alerts and continuing to unlock the bootloader on an Android device will suffer a wipe-out of their device along with the private keys. Solana Labs released the Saga Phone in April 2022 for $1,099, complete with a Web3-native DApp store, aiming to amalgamate tech Device hardware with cryptocurrency apps. However, sales plunge leads to a reduction in Saga’s price to $599 four months after the launch. CertiK has yet to respond to a request for a comment on Solana Lab’s objections.
