Singapore Unveils Updated National AI Strategy 2.0 to Boost Innovation, Expertise and Computing Capabilities

Algoine News
Summary:
Singapore unveils its updated National AI Strategy 2.0, detailing plans to promote AI innovation and tackle related challenges. The roadmap includes steps to establish AI "Centers of Excellence", train AI practitioners, and increase computing capabilities, among others. These measures are set to be implemented over the next three to five years, aligning with Singapore's ambitious goals in the AI sector.
Singapore's government unveiled its revised National AI Strategy 2.0 on Dec. 4, detailing its strategies for navigating the landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and fostering innovation. The strategy is organized into three specific systems, buttressed by 10 drivers and 15 action-oriented measures. The first iteration of this strategy was launched in 2019. The strategized framework is centered around three core pillars: drivers of activities, human communities, and environmental infrastructure. A prominent initiative is Singapore's intent to establish advanced AI "Centers of Excellence" within corporations operating domestically, with a goal to enhance AI capability and application in vital industry sectors. The revamped strategy also sets goals for equipping government bodies with specialized knowledge, technical skills, and regulatory instruments and enhancing AI competency among all public officials. In line with the strategy, Singapore plans to utilize government resources to facilitate AI integration in the public sector. The strategy also outlines the aim to raise the country's pool of AI specialists or local experts to 15,000, achieved by increased investment in AI training initiatives, technology, and talent growth. The country is also welcoming international professionals. With many AI-focused training programs having secured over 2,700 individuals in lucrative jobs, the strategy appears to be effective. Mirroring many other nations globally, Singapore intends to enhance its computing capabilities. Toward this goal, the government will strengthen alliances with major industry participants, including chip manufacturers and cloud services providers, and support homegrown compute industry companies. The action plan is anticipated to be rolled out over the next three to five years, buoying Singapore's aspirations in the AI arena. Like many other countries, Singapore is stepping up its commitment to AI. Most recently, the United Kingdom pledged to devote 300 million pounds at its AI Safety Summit to procure and operate two AI supercomputers to bolster its global AI footprint. Renowned AI developer OpenAI revealed a collaboration with G42 in Dubai to extend its influence in the Middle East, and the United States—a leading global hub for chip manufacturing—has initiated stricter export controls focused on nations using its technology to design and operate advanced AI systems.
