Following more than two years of development, the Scroll team were delighted to unveil the mainnet.
A zkEVM service like that provided by Scroll strives to offer decentralized applications running on Ethereum with a superior throughput at reduced transaction costs. This is achieved by off-chain consolidation of thousands of transactions into a single one, and then providing a proof comprising a minimal data summary to Ethereum's mainnet. Data from the blockchain reveals that the news of Scroll's mainnet being operative had been withheld since October 8, the day when the first smart contract was kickstarted on Scroll mainnet as per Etherscan data. The mainnet's launch, according to Scroll, follows 15 months of rigorous evaluation and security checks conducted over three distinct testnets. Scroll also confirmed that OpenZeppelin and Zellic audited their bridge and rollup contracts. In addition, Trail of Bits, Zellic, and KALOS reviewed the company's zkEVM circuits. They boasted that in their three testnets, more than 450,000 smart contracts had been installed, producing over 90 million transactions across 9 million blocks. Also, the company reported generating 280,000 ZK-proofs.
Reflecting on the past month, Scroll co-founder Ye Zhang disclosed to Cointelegraph that Scroll, which initially launched with centralized features, is planning to progressively decentralize over time. Zhang further stated that they'll primarily have a centralized sequencer and a central approval button, which they intend to eventually remove. Zhang added that various proposals will be put forth by the Scroll team to incite community discussions on what would be best for Scroll's future progression. Scroll's inception in 2021 was founded on the idea of driving more community participation. Other zkEVM solutions working on Ethereum's scalability include well-known names like Polygon, zkSync, StarkWare, and Immutable. Jordi Baylina, the technical leader of Polygon Hermez zkEVM, recently emphasized to Cointelegraph the importance of competition in the zkEVM field, stating it will only strengthen the Ethereum ecosystem.
